As you may be aware, Angela Welburn, one of our founding members has reluctantly had to step down from committee duties. This is another huge loss to the committee and the history group in general as her contributions over the years has been huge.
Angela has recently asked her family for a replacement bench in the garden as the old one is falling apart. As a small thank you, the history group committee have made a donation towards the bench which includes a plaque thanking her for her work with the history group. The plaque may go a long way in helping Angela to remember her time with the group.
If any member would like to see the bench in place, Angela can be found at The Forge, Lutterworth Road and will welcome any visitors.
Sadley, we have also lost yet another committee member. Liz Walton has had to step down due to personal reasons and is also unable to assist at our events.
The call is out for volunteers to help out at our events. We would welcome any help given and rest assured you will not be coerced into becoming a committee member. If you can help in any way with setting up, putting away after the event, greeting people on the door or helping with refreshments please let us know.
Just as a reminder: We have a table at the coming Beer Festival on August 25th – 27th with a static display.
Our next event in September – Tuesday 12th at 7.30pm and Wednesday 13th at 10.00am we will now be holding “Open House” on both days’ free entry and free refreshments. We have put together a display showing what we are all about, a timeline showing what we have achieved in the past etc. and all our archives will be available. Display boards will be about the School, Old House Farm as it rises from the rubble, an item about Mr Gilmorton himself, Nev Robbins, and we shall have the projector running showing photos of Gilmorton in the past.
The quiz / treasure hunt, launched on 1st July, will continue until 31st October. Quiz sheets (complete with map giving village locations) will cost £1 each and are available from Gilmorton village shop, committee members and our events and from 1st Friday Coffee mornings. Closing date for entries is 31st October.
Our November event will be on Tuesday 7th at 7.00pm and again Wednesday 8th November at 9.30am and entitled “Tales of the Unexpected”. We have booked our very own, Gilmorton grown,Tom the Tale Teller (for both days) who will be telling stories of the ghostly goings on in Gilmorton and surrounding areas. Tom will be telling his tales at approx. 8.00pm on the Tuesday and approx. 10.30am on the Wednesday for about an hour each day. Note the slightly earlier times. This will
enable visitors to be seated in plenty of time prior to Toms sessions. Although the history group has to pay for Tom the Tale Teller, we are absorbing the cost ourselves so there will be no extra charge for entry.
To accompany this will be our own displays showing all the apparently haunted places in thesurrounding area. These you may wish to visit yourself – if you dare. Looks like one not to be missed. We are really looking forward to the November event as it is not quite the run of the mill eventsthat we usually have.
You can also renew your membership at any of our events giving you free entry to our regular events with
the usual free refreshments thrown in.
