It’s usually a quiet time through the summer months and almost 3 months between our June and September event - but not so for the committee. As you are aware we have been forced to make several changes this year which have been imposed on us by other parties.
The committee itself has had some major upsets once again. Angela Welburn, one of our founding members has reluctantly had to step down from committee duties. Angela was a huge contributor to the history group with her stories and memories of Gilmorton past. She was always at the events helping out with setting up, often in the kitchen and always ready to chat to visitors.
Katie Soars has also stepped down from committee duties due to personal reasons. Katie came on board with her friend Liz Walton a little while ago mainly to help with the social side and fund raising but latterly took on more responsibilities. Both will remain as members with Katie still volunteering her services at our events. Both are a huge loss to the committee and we thank them for all their hard work in the past.
Some good news on the committee front – Now on board we have John Buckle and Jen Brandon, both from the village. Already their presence has been felt and we are sure they will be a great asset to the group.
As mentioned earlier it’s a relatively a quiet period but the committee, in the background, are busy and well on the way with our 2024 events. There is a lot of forward planning with some great ideas for the coming year. More about 2024 nearer the time.
We have also secured a table at the coming Beer Festival on August 25th – 27th with a static display. Another spot to spread our name. If you see us there you can always by us a beer or two!!!!!
Back to our next event in September – Tuesday 12th at 7.30pm and Wednesday 13th at 10.00am we will now be holding “Open House” on both days’ free entry and free refreshments. We have put together a display showing what we are all about, a timeline showing what we have achieved in the past etc, and all our archives will be available. Display boards will be about the School, Old House Farm as it rises from the rubble, an item about Mr Gilmorton himself, Nev Robbins, and we shall have the projector running showing photos of Gilmorton in the past.
Our planned quiz / treasure hunt was launched on 1st July and will run until 31st October. So, if you fancy a bit of a quiz with a walk around the village looking for clues then this is right up your street.
Quiz sheets (complete with map giving village locations) will cost £1 each and will be available from Gilmorton village shop, committee members and our events and from 1st Friday Coffee mornings.
Closing date for entries is 31st October. Prizes will be made available as follows: 1st prize £20 – 2nd Prize £10 and 3rd prize a year’s subscription to the History Groups membership. Winners will be announced at the November event and in the village newsletter.
Our November event will be on Tuesday 7th at 7.00pm and again Wednesday 8th November at 9.30am and entitled “Tales of the Unexpected”. We have booked our very own, Gilmorton grown, Tom the Tale Teller (for both days) who will be telling stories of the ghostly goings on in Gilmorton and surrounding areas. Tom will be telling his tales at approx. 8.00pm on the Tuesday and approx. 10.30am on the Wednesday for about an hour each day. Note the slightly earlier times. This will enable visitors to be seated in plenty of time prior to Toms sessions.
Although the history group has to pay for Tom the Tale Teller, we are absorbing the cost ourselves so there will be no extra charge for entry.
To accompany this will be our own displays showing all the apparently haunted places in the surrounding area. These you may wish to visit yourself – if you dare. Looks like one not to be missed.
We are really looking forward to the November event as it is not quite the run of the mill events that we usually have.
You can renew your membership at any of our events giving you free entry to our regular events.
