Gilmorton History Group Newsletter
June 2023
Firstly, apologies for not sending out the newsletter prior to the June event but we were waiting for decisions on several issues.
As you m ay be aware we have been forced to make several changes to our events for this year mostly due to circumstances beyond our control. We have worked hard to find and prepare alternatives but once again, at the very last moment, we have been forced to cancel what we had planned for September. Trying to get several people together on the same dates is always difficult.
We have not given up on this quite unique event for us and we will hopefully run it sometime next year when we have more time to get all the different parties together.
As for September – Tuesday 12th at 7.30pm and Wednesday 13th at 10.00am we will now be holding “Open House” on both days with free refreshments, a bit of a display showing what we are all about, a timeline showing what we have achieved in the past etc and all our archives will be available. Just the right place for a good old chin wag.
We have also planned a quiz / treasure hunt which will be run as a separate event running from 1st July until 31st October. Previously we had planned to start it 1st June but planning and advertising dates clashed hence another re jig, but this later launch will still give entrants plenty of time to complete it. So, if you fancy a bit of a quiz with a walk around the village looking for clues then this is right up your street.
Quiz sheets (complete with map giving village locations) will cost £1 each and will be available from 1st July from Gilmorton village shop, committee members and our events and from 1st Friday Coffee mornings. Closing date for entries is 31st October. Prizes will be made available as follows: 1st prize £20 – 2nd Prize £10 and 3rd prize a year’s subscription to the History Groups membership. Winners will be announced at the November event and in the village newsletter.
Our November event will be on Tuesday 7th at 7.00pm and again Wednesday 8th November at 9.30am and entitled “Tales of the Unexpected”. We have booked our very own, Gilmorton grown, Tom the Tale Teller (for both days) who will be telling stories of the ghostly goings on in Gilmorton and surrounding areas. Tom will be telling his tales at approx. 8.00pm on the Tuesday and approx. 10.30am on the Wednesday for about an hour each day. Note the slightly earlier times. This will enable visitors to be seated in plenty of time prior to Toms sessions.
Although the history group has to pay for Tom the Tale Teller, we are absorbing the cost ourselves so there will be no extra charge for entry.
To accompany this will be our own displays showing all the apparently haunted places in the surrounding area. These you may wish to visit yourself – if you dare. Looks like one not to be missed.
We are really looking forward to the November event as it is not quite the run of the mill events that we usually have.
We did mention in our February issue regarding members who have not renewed for over a year and that we were in the process of tidying up our member database with a result that members who had not renewed after the given grace period will not receive a newsletter. We have not been able to complete the update of our database as yet but do hope to complete it by the end of the year.
You can renew your membership at any of our events giving you free entry to our regular events with non-members just £3 pp on the day with the usual free refreshments thrown in.
