Gilmorton History Group Newsletter
May 2023
Firstly, apologies for there being no April newsletter as we have a few changes to contend with and these were not finalised until the very end of April. More about the changes later.
Our last event “Vintage Farming & Country Life’ was another huge success showing what farming and country life was like during the past. A huge range of artifacts was on display courtesy of Lutterworth Museum, Bob Morris, Barbara Tivey and Pete Jackson.
A couple of highlights had to be the manual operated sheep shearer with its dangerously sharp blades and the ‘Bloodless Castrator’ which brought tears to the eyes just looking at it. On the Tuesday evening we had Rob Foxon from Attfields Films showing cine film of vintage farming and scenes of Lutterworth and Ashby Magna. A big surprise for all was the final film, which was from 1953 and in colour, showing how thousands of chosen children were brought into London by steam trains and buses to watch the Coronation Procession along the Mall. Rob had never shown this film prior to our event – but as the Kings Coronation was approaching – he decided that the history group would have first viewing!!!
Our next event in June is confirmed as Gilmorton Families. We do hope to have some images from the churchyard to accompany this. This event will be on Tuesday 13th at 7.30pm and Wednesday 14th June 10.00am in the village hall as usual.
Our planned event for September has had to cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. It was to have been “A village walk” accompanied by drone footage of the walk displayed in the hall and also a village walk quiz. We are still in the throes of organising a replacement event but more later when it is confirmed. The quiz which was to be run at this event will now be run as a separate event running from 1st June until 31st October giving entrants plenty of time to complete it. Quiz
sheets will cost £1 each and available shortly from Gilmorton village shop, committee members and our events and from 1
st Friday Coffee mornings. Closing date for entries is 31st October. Prizes will be made available.
Although September is yet to be finalised, we can confirm our November event. It will be on Tuesday 7th at 7.30pm and again 8th November at 10.00am and entitled “Tales of the Unexpected”. We have booked our very own, Gilmorton grown, Tom the Tale Teller (for both days) who will be telling stories of the ghostly goings on in Gilmorton and surrounding areas. Tom will be telling his tales at approx. 8.00pm on the Tuesday and approx. 10.30am on the Wednesday for about an hour each day. To accompany this will be our own displays showing all the apparently haunted places in the surrounding area. These you may wish to visit yourself – if you dare. Looks like one not to be missed.
Also this month sees our AGM on Wednesday 22nd November at 7.30pm. The November event and the AGM are the ideal times to renew your membership which is still just £10 for the whole year giving you free entry to regular events, early
notification of special/social events and a monthly newsletter. You are welcome to bring family and friends along but for non-members, an entry fee of £3 applies.
