Gilmorton History Group Newsletter
November 2025
Rapidly we move on to our last event for 2025 - Pictorial Gilmorton on Tuesday 4th November at 7pm and again Wednesday 5th November at 10.00am. Please note the earlier start time on Tuesday evening as this event will commence with our 2025 10th AGM where everyone is welcome. It is your chance to have your say. Have we got it right at our events? What topics would you like us to cover? We would love to hear your views. So, pop along - There is no risk of you being railroaded into joining the committee.
This event also sees the judging of the photographic competition which ran for the first half of the year. We have received 50 brilliant entries so the judges will have a difficult time on their hands. The independent judging will take place prior to the start of the Tuesday evening event. There will be a £20 prize for the winner in each category those being adult and under 16 years. All photographic entries will be on display along with our own contribution covering Pictorial Gilmorton.
Our monthly competition related to Village Information Boards is now under way and the first question which was for October, and has now closed, was:
What is the oldest building mentioned on the information boards?
he correct answer was Tansley’s Thatch and the first correct entry out of the hat was Lindsey Walker of Gilmorton.
Many congratulations to Lindsey who receives a box of Lindt Swiss Luxury Selection chocolates.
The question for November is:
What was built in the reign of King Stephen?
Answers by e-mail to
All correct entries go into the draw for the prize which this month is a box of Belgian Chocolates – Dessert Selection.
Lookout for another quiz question next month. Good luck.
A reminder that you can always log on to our website where you will find details of all our upcoming events. Lost your newsletter? Don’t worry they are all available on the web site.
Our archives section contains 26 different categories with over 340 documents which include write ups and photographs. Everything on the website is freely available for both downloading and printing.
Another gentle reminder that 2026 membership subscription is now due. You can renew at any of the events or pop your subs in an envelope at 4 Lutterworth Road, Gilmorton. Remember to include you contact details. Still good value for money at £10 for the year. You will receive a monthly newsletter, free entry to all regular events and first chance to any ticketed event.
We have now, provisionally, pencilled in our program of events for 2026. The April and June events may swop dates, but we will notify members if that happens.
Until now most of our events have covered Gilmorton village. The committee have spoken on many occasions about running events that go further afield. 2026 sees those changes take place and we hope they will appeal not only to our regular members and visitors but to a wider and different audience.
The 2026 schedule is:
FEBRUARY – Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th - “Alice and the Sample” – The history group have been given a few items of historic interest by Gilmorton School and one was a Sampler beautifully created by Alice Smith aged 10 years and completed in 1891. The event covers her fascinating history and life.
APRIL – Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th – “Rugby School” An event about Rugby school and the sport of Rugby. We do hope to have a guest speaker from Rugby school on the Tuesday night.
JUNE – Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th – “Gilmorton Memories” We are looking at getting a few village residents in a group discussion to talk about their memories of Gilmorton.
SEPTEMBER – Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th – “Gilmorton Church” Another change here as we are joining forces with the church to coincide with Heritage Week which is held nationally by museums and history related groups and organisations. The actual event will be staged in Gilmorton Church. The history group have considered a Heritage Week event for a couple of years and now we have the opportunity. In line with Heritage Week policy, there will be no entry fee.
NOVEMBER – Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th – “Polish Settlement Camps” Bozena Kunzewicz will be a guest speaker on the Wednesday morning ONLY and will give a talk on the Polish settlement in the UK and especially the displaced Poles after the war in camps such as Husbands Bosworth.
We are still on the lookout for suitable people to join us on our committee. The committee consists of just four members and as such has a heavy workload. Alternatively, if you feel you could offer any help without being committed to a committee you are just what we need. So, if you feel you could be part of the team and get involved in Gilmorton’s fascinating history, we would love to hear from you.
