An unexpected email arrived in our In box recently from a lady named Sue Cantrill from Hinckley who was researching her family history. The email was a request for information about her great grandad who used to live in Gilmorton. A couple of emails back and forth brought to light that her great grandad was Fred Tansley who was the wheelwright/carpenter who lived in Tansley’s Thatch (next door to the village hall).
From our own research in the past, we knew that Fred Tansley was also the granddad of our very own Gillian Weston. Both Sue and Gillian, who had never met and did not know of the others presence, met at our Sept open house event.
Also arriving at the event was another of our members, Doreen Pegg from Lutterworth, who used to live in Gilmorton many years ago. She is also related to the Tansley’s. The three of them spent the morning together reminiscing. Sue has also received all our archived material relating to the Tansley’s.
It’s great to see the distant strands of a family’s history coming together!!!
Our next event and one to look forward to will be on Tuesday 7th at 7.00pm and again Wednesday 8th November at 9.30am and entitled “Tales of the Unexpected”. We have booked our very own, Gilmorton grown, Tom the Tale Teller (for both days) who will be telling stories of the ghostly goings on in Gilmorton and surrounding areas. Tom will be telling his tales at approx. 8.00pm on the Tuesday and approx. 10.30am on the Wednesday for about an hour each day.
Note the slightly earlier times. This will enable visitors to be seated in plenty of time prior to Toms sessions.
To accompany this will be our own displays showing all the apparently haunted places in the surrounding area. These you may wish to visit yourself – if you dare. Looks like one not to be missed.
We are always on the lookout for volunteers to help out at our events. If you can help in any way with setting up, putting away after the event, greeting people on the door or helping with refreshments please let us know. Any help will be appreciated.
Recently the history group applied for Windfarm funding to purchase a Laptop and an A3 printer/copier/scanner. Bob Morris currently uses his aging and personal computer and printer for the history group work. This is not an ideal situation and due to its age, it’s uses are limited and unsuitable for some of our work. The dedicated laptop will enable Bobs personal data and the history groups data to be separate and the printer will also give us better printing/scanning facilities and improving production of the group’s booklets.
After being called to a Parish Council meeting, we are now pleased to announce that we have been successful in our application. A huge thank you goes to the Parish Council for awarding the funding.
Another year has flown by and it’s that time of year again, The AGM. If you would like free refreshments, a minced pie and a laugh or two then pop along and support us. There are no commitments and its your chance to have your say about how the history group has been run and we would love to hear new proposals for the future.
The AGM is on Wednesday 22nd November at 7.30pm in the village hall.
It is also time for you to think about renewing your membership for 2024. You can renew at the AGM or any of our regular events. This is still just £10 for the year and for that you get free entry to all regular events. You get a monthly newsletter, early notification of upcoming events and first chance with any ticketed events.
You can also pop £10 (per person) in a sealed envelope with your contact details and drop it in at
No. 4 Lutterworth Road.
We are currently working on our 2024 events. Some are confirmed but for others are still waiting on third parties before we can finalise them. We hope to publish them as soon as they are confirmed.
