Gilmorton History Group Newsletter - October 2021
Our Open House last September was well attended and especially by newcomers to the village. Several have expressed an interest in joining our group. This is good news for the group as we do hope to attract many more members from the newcomers.
Due to sickness and holidays the group committee were rather thin on the ground at the Open House so a big thank you to Pat and Sandra for stepping in at the last moment to help out with refreshments.
But time marches on and we are now in the throes of organising our first proper event since February last year. The topic this time will be “Toys and Games thro’ the Ages.” It will run on Tuesday 2nd November at 7.30pm and again Wednesday 3rd November at 10.00am in the village hall.
If you have any really old toys and games you would like us to include in our displays, please contact us preferably before the event dates. A few facts about the item are always useful too. We already have a couple of quite interesting items that are being loaned by folk from the village. We promise to take great care with them. Your memories of toys and games are also very important to us - that treasured surprise on Christmas day or a favourite toy that got damaged or even lost. We want to hear all about it.
Although it’s our first proper event this year, ironically, it’s also the last one for 2021. However, our AGM is on Wednesday 24th November at 7.30pm in the village hall. We know these can be boring, but we do get the ‘business side’ out of the way quite quickly and then it’s open forum and free refreshments for you to have a say in the way forward with ideas for future events. We are already making some headway and do have some topics pencilled in for 2022 - but we really do need your support. We promise not to press gang you into anything.
Please note that we will be taking 2022 membership renewals and new subscriptions at both Toys thro’ the Ages event and at the AGM.
Reluctantly, we have had to increase subscription for 2022 to £10. We are sure that members will understand as it is the first increase since membership began in November 2015 and will go some way to ease a quickly diminishing bank balance.
The history group has had no income since February 2021, yet we still have to pay a monthly charge for the website hosting and maintenance. Funding this would not normally have been an issue was it was not for the Covid lockdown.
With this in mind we submitted an application for Wind Farm funding via the Parish Council to help with the website running costs. We are pleased to announce that our application has been successful and, once in our account, the money will be ringfenced and used solely for the purpose of maintaining the website for the coming year.
We had previously announced that we were looking at organising another skittles night at Lutterworth Bowls Club in October. After a meeting by the bowls committee, they have decided that due to the Covid situation these types of events are currently still on hold. Sadly, it is out of our control and this social event will have to wait for another time.
We are really looking forward to meeting up with everyone again and hopefully see you all in November.
