Gilmorton History Group – Newsletter August 2021
After the cancellation of Open House last July, the reorganised event will now be on Tuesday 7th September at 7.30pm and again on Wednesday 8th September at 10.00am both in the village hall. Once again this is open to everyone including newcomers to the village. Refreshments will be available. Obviously, this event is subject to any more changes imposed but things look promising to date.
Due to re-arrangements, we only have one regular event planned for the remainder of 2021. This will be on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd November entitled Toys and Games thro’ the Ages. If you have any really old toys and games you would like us to include in our displays, please contact us preferably before the event dates. We promise to take extra care with them.
Bringing 2021 to a close is the AGM which is on Wednesday 24th November at 7.30pm in the village hall. We really do need your support at the AGM. The main business is dealt with quickly then we need your input as to how we proceed. You will not be press ganged into anything as its opinions and ideas for consideration that we need. You get free mince pies too!
Gilmorton Beer Festival is 27th – 29th August and the history group has been invited to have a stall in the Pavilion where we shall have a small display. It should include a few photos and Archive folders, how we began etc and will be manned most of the time by the history group committee. This is a huge coup for us as we will be on display to a huge number of people. Please come up and say hello.
We are still working on the next category for the Website, “Gilmorton at War”, but it is a huge one and will be a little while before it is ready.
A huge thankyou must go to Malcolm Butcher, one of our members. If you monitor Spotted Gilmorton then you will have seen some of his postings about old Gilmorton. During his research he has collected and collated a huge amount of old newspaper articles dating as far back as 1700. He has passed this collection of over 1,100 articles on to the history group. They sure do make extremely interesting and often amusing stories. Gilmorton wasn’t always the quiet little Leicestershire village we thought it was. They will all eventually be prepared and uploaded to the Website.
The Website monthly ongoing costs is funded from our own bank account. Due to having no income from regular and social events over the past 18 months and still having to pay for monthly dues, our bank account funds are rapidly diminishing. In light of this we are in the process of submitting an application, via the Parish Council, for Wind Farm Funding to cover a 2-year period of these monthly Website costs. We are quite optimistic in this process as the Websites initial construction was funded by the Wind Farm.
Another possible date for the diary will be in October. Tentative plans are underway to organise another Bowls evening at Lutterworth Bowls Club. Those who attended the last one must remember it was hugely successful and a laugh a minute. No experience is needed (and this was pretty evident at the time). More on this at a later date.
Please note that all our event dates and times, newsletters and any important notifications etc are now published on the Website.
