Gilmorton Village History Group Update – July 2019
Back in May we had our first trial run of a coffee morning. It proved to be a great success and so we have planned another one on WEDNESDAY 16th OCTOBER at 10.00am. Again it is open for members and non members alike so everyone is welcome – a date to put in your diary.
The Arboretum trip last June was also a great day out with a full coach and good weather. Everyone was booked on the ‘noddy train’ but on arrival we were welcomed by their staff who informed us that the train wasn’t running due to flooding in the Arboretum. (The Arboretum is alongside the river and built on a flood plain and after days of continual rain flooding was inevitable). The staff had transferred us onto their smaller buggies which enabled us to have a dedicated driver with live commentary and go to areas where the train could not. This added to the entertainment instead of ruining our day.
The July event in the village hall was entitled “A walk through the village”. Sadly Tuesday evening proved rather cold and wet. No one ventured out to do the walks and attendance was a little low. Wednesday was a totally different day – with loads of visitors and new members. Some were new to the village and decided to do the walk to familiarise themselves with the location. Overall, it was a successful event. We plan to publish the walks at a later date.
It will be a little quieter during the summer months due to holidays etc. but work is ongoing in the background to prepare for our next event – ‘The Day War Broke Out’ on SEPTEMBER 17/18th
War was declared on 3rd September 1939. There are at least 4 couples in the village whose anniversary is on 3rd
September although they did not get married in 1939 (details later!) If you have a special occasion on the 3rd September or were married because of the war, please let us know in advance. We will also look at how the village and residents prepared themselves and how they coped with evacuees, rationing etc. If you have any stories, photos etc we would love to display them.
NOVEMBER 19/20th sees our remembrance event ‘Lest We forget’ where we remember all wars and those who were affected by them. Details will follow later
To round off the year we have our AGM on Wednesday 27th at 7.30pm.
