December 2025 Newsletter
Our last event for 2025 - Pictorial Gilmorton saw the culmination of the photographic competition which ran for the first half of the year.
Independent judging took place prior to the start of the event proper with the judges taking about an hour and a half to come to their decision. With 51 entries they had a difficult job on their hands and we thank them for their time and effort.
Their final decision was Finlay Granger (age 13 years) for the under 16 category and Emma McDonald for the adult section. Both live in Gilmorton. Congratulations to Finlay and Emma and a huge thankyou to all those who made the effort to enter.
The photographic entries were accompanied by our own pictorial display complete with a PowerPoint presentation covering old scenes of Gilmorton complete with the present-day view.
Our monthly competition related to Village Information Boards is now well under way and the question for November was:
What was built in the reign of King Stephen?
The correct answer was – Motte and Bailey
The winner this month is Paul Bakewell who receives a box of Belgian Chocolates – Dessert Selection. Congratulations to Paul.
The question for December is:
What does the red dotted line signify?
Answers by e-mail to
All correct entries go into the draw for the prize which this month is Cookies House Tin – a seasonal feel.
Look out for the January question which you will also find on our Spotted Gilmorton page too.
Good luck everyone.
Up until now the history groups events have always been about Gilmorton itself but we have often considered looking further afield for the events. The 2026 events see that coming to fruition and we do hope they will attract a much wider audience.
We have now finalised our 2026 events and the proposed dates for your diary are:
FEBRUARY – Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th - “Alice and her Sampler” – The history group have been given a few items of historic interest by Gilmorton School. One item stood out that being a Sampler, beautifully created by Alice Smith aged 10 years and completed in 1891. The event covers her fascinating history and life.
APRIL – Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th – “Rugby School” An event about Rugby school and the sport of Rugby. We do hope to have a guest speaker from Rugby school on the Tuesday night.
JUNE – Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th – “Gilmorton Memories” We are looking at getting a few village residents in a group discussion to talk about their memories of Gilmorton.
SEPTEMBER – Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th – “Gilmorton Church” Another change here as we have a joint venture with Gilmorton church and the event will be held in the church itself. This will coincide with Heritage Week which is held nationally by museums and history related groups and organisations. The history group have considered a Heritage Week event for some time and now we have the opportunity. In line with Heritage Week policy, there will be no entry fee.
NOVEMBER – Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th – “Polish Settlement Camps” Bozena Kunzewicz will be a guest speaker on the Tuesday evening ONLY and will give a talk on the Polish settlement in the UK and especially the displaced Poles after the war in camps such as Husbands Bosworth.
Note: April and June may swap dates.
A reminder that you can always log on to our website where you will find details of all our upcoming events. Our archives section contains 26 different categories with over 340 documents which include write ups and photographs. Everything on the website is freely available for both downloading and printing.
Another gentle reminder that 2026 membership subscription is now due. You can renew at any of the events or pop your subs in an envelope at 4 Lutterworth Road, Gilmorton. Remember to include you contact details. Still good value for money at £10 for the year. You will receive a monthly newsletter, free entry to all regular events and first chance to any ticketed event.
We are still on the lookout for suitable people to join us on our committee. Alternatively, if you feel you could offer any help without being committed to a committee you are just what we need. So, if you feel you could be part of the team and get involved in Gilmorton’s fascinating history, we would love to hear from you.
The history group would like to take this opportunity to thank our members and visitors for their support over the past year and to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
