Gilmorton History Group – Newsletter April 2021
Most people are now aware of our Web Site and the fact that we are uploading items to it.
Up to now most of the items uploaded have been specifically chosen as there are little or no photographs of individuals. Recently we have been collecting a few signatures which gives permission for an individual’s photo to be published.
However, we are now coming to categories where there are numerous photos of both adults and children especially within “Celebrations” and some date back to the 1950s and even earlier. It covers village celebrations such as Beer Festival, Sports events, Queens 90th Birthday, Charles & Diana’s Wedding street party 1981, Millennium, School fete etc. etc.
Some of the children are now adults and it is almost impossible and impractical to identify every individual. There are an extremely high number of photographs involved in these events, some going back 70 years, and many are no longer with us.
We have sourced the Internet to see where we stand under “General Data Protection Regulations” (GDPR) and, as many of the photographs may come under a “Historical banner” we feel that we can continue without obtaining signatures.
We feel sure that most people will understand our reasoning.
If anyone does identify a photo and does not it wish it to be published, then the GHG will remove it or blank it out.
To date we have uploaded the following categories:
Buildings and Streets Pt1 - NorthBuildings and Streets & Pt2 - South
Gilmorton Village Trail Gilmorton Memories (individual’s memories)
Shops & Traders Gilmorton Disasters
Our Farming Community Celebrations and Festivities
Sports and Games Church and Chapel (work in progress)
For the more technical minded we are developing lever arch folders for each category (and have been for quite some time) and completed ones have been on display at our past events.
For the purpose of archiving, every single document and image from those folders has had to be scanned so giving us a digital copy. All finished documents, either in Microsoft Word or Publisher, must then be converted to a “PDF” format before they can be uploaded to the Website. The result is that each folder is a mirror image of what appears on the Website. A rather time-consuming job - but we plough on.
As more items appear on the Website, we are quite happy to receive any corrections, additions, identification of people in photographs etc. to anything that is published.
